Mathematics teaching

Upper secondary courses

The foundations of mathematics are covered quickly but thoroughly, with care taken to develop an understanding of its structure, methods, applications and traditions. The aim is to have, by the beginning of October in the first year, the skills needed for university mathematics courses and for studying physics properly. In practice this means nearly all of the Finnish advanced (“long”) upper secondary mathematics syllabus, extended and deepened where needed – in about three months instead of the usual three years.

In upper secondary mathematics, the aim is to let fast learners progress as far as their abilities allow. At the same time, resit exams and revision periods make excellent results possible for every student.

Competition training

Finland’s national mathematics olympiad training takes place at Päivölä, and our students can take part. Revision of the more standard topics is offered at the same time.

In most years our students have also done well in other mathematics competitions, both national and international.

YliopisTOKurssit

Opportunities to study university mathematics are developed and offered according to students’ interests. Students can take Open University courses from various Finnish universities.
